Hey James, can you introduce yourself to us?
I am James Anthony, all around artist with a current focus on photography, directing and illustration.
Summar of your journey to where you are now?
I have always been a creative starting my journey with acting and illustrating. I’ve studied the field of Mass Communications and Theater since grade school. Attending college on track and field scholarship and then gradu0ating with a Bachelors of Art from Savannah State University. I later moved to ATL where I laid the foundation for my photographer career. I began traveling a lot more and most recently relocated to LA. I am now bicoastal between LA and NYC.
Can you tell us how you cultivated your successful photography career?
While in college I completed an internship at VIBE magazine in NYC, in the photo department, where I fell in love with editorial photography. I then studied editorial and fine art photography and worked on my craft with any talent I could get my hands on. I grew my clientele by word of mouth while remaining a student in my field. Always experimenting, always learning. Still learning.
What has been the most rewarding/exciting project you have worked on to date and why?
One of my most rewarding projects to date would have to be working with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) for their inaugural celebration. I got to bring #JamesShootsandDraws to life for their red carpet.
Can you give us 3 solid tips for aspiring photographers out there wanting to get their foot in the door?
Remain hungry! Stay consistent and be a people person. It will get you further than you can imagine.
Where do you draw your creative energy and inspiration from?
I draw my creative energy from my surroundings. Daily life, music, movies, and travel.
How do you stay motivated?
What keeps me motivated is that I know I don’t want to work for anyone else and that my successful future is mine to own as long as I stay steadfast on my path.
Is there a team behind you? If yes, Who?
No one does it alone. I have a great support team full of other creatives I draw energy from. It’s important to keep people around you who inspire and motivate you. My wife and family have always been supportive of my career. And last but not least, crwdMGMT had been a great asset within the last 2 years of helping me grow my business and take it to the next level.
Where can you see yourself within the next 3-5 years?
In the next 3-5 years, I see myself doing more directing and producing, also doing more acting.
What are the key tools that you use for your trade?
I couldn’t function without a calendar. I don’t travel anywhere without my laptop or my camera!
What is the number 1 critical business lesson you have learned so far?
Just as you are diligent with acquiring the client, in the beginning, you must also be just as diligent on the tail end with delivering what they are expecting/ what they paid for in a timely manner. That ensures the “comeback!”
A seminal point in your career so far?
A seminal point in my career thus far has been the choice to be more creative in my work with the incorporation of #JamesShootsandDraws. The internet has been very responsive to the movement and has opened many doors for me. I felt adding illustration to my photography was a fun way to pay tribute to the first craft I ever picked up and a way to set me apart from all of the photographers I had been studying up until that point. I found a way to #BEMyOWN.
How do you define your own success?
What does #BEYOUROWNMAN mean to you?
To me, #BEYOUROWNMAN means creating your own story/path without bashing or downing anyone else. There is room for all of us to shine in our own right. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else. That goes the same for your successes.
Finally, what are you working on throughout 2019 that we can look forward to?
I am working on a script for Netflix, a short film I’ll be submitting to film festivals on the top of 2020. I’m working on a photo exhibit that will drop later this year. Also, be on the lookout on a web-series dropping on IG TV within weeks!
